Powerful and effective, the Toro Ultra 3-in-1 Blower, Vacuum, and Leaf Shredder makes completing yard work fun and easy. With air speeds up to 235 mph, this electric blower nevertheless is lighter, quieter, and cleaner than similar gas blowers. And with a sleek, ergonomical design, it's a tool that is easy to use and will grab your neighbors' attention.

The Toro Ultra 3-in-1 Blower, Vacuum, and Leaf Shredder:
  • Is electric so it is lighter, quieter, and cleaner than similar gas blower.
  • Has a variable speed motor.
  • Features a metal impeller for mulching debris.

Convert from blower to vacuum without tools.

The metal impeller shreds leaves into a mulch.

The impeller can reduce up to 16 bags' worth of waste to one bag.
Match the Power to the Task for Better Results
Tackle big clean-up jobs the right way with this powerful blower vac. A variable speed 12 Amp motor lets you select from an infinite variety of speeds between 112 mph and 235 mph. This means that you can use low speeds to clear off hard surfaces and clean up tight areas without making a mess and without sacrificing the blower's high-speed functionality.

Air Speed and Air Volume to Get Yard Jobs Done
Unlike some manufacturers, who simply reduce the size of their blower nozzles to achieve higher air speed ratings without increasing the practical value of their tools, Toro gives this blower vac the ability to balance between air speed (measured in mph) and air volume (measured in cfm) to ensure maximum power and performance. This Ultra blower vac offers air speeds up to 235 mph and air volume up to 255 cfm, allowing you to move a substantial volume of leaves and debris with ease.

3-in-1 Versatility Makes Managing Tasks Easy
A convenient quick-release latch lets you convert your blower into a vacuum in seconds without any tools, while a metal impeller makes it easy to mulch debris.

The magnesium serrated metal blades on the impeller shred leaves and other unwanted debris into a fine mulch that you can use around your lawn and garden, saving money and recycling important nutrients. It also makes it easy to dispose of unwanted yard waste, since the impeller can reduce 16 bags’ worth of leaves to one bag.

Clean and Efficient with Electric Power
Compared with gas blowers, electric blowers are quieter and require less maintenance. They start up instantly without requiring you to master a finicky pull cord. There's no messy gas-oil mixture to worry about, and you don't have to contend with noxious fumes to get a job done.

This high-powered blower also weighs in at a very manageable 7.5 pounds, making it easy on your back.

This blower/vac is backed by a full two-year warranty.

What's in the Box
Power unit, blower tubes, vac tubes, vac bag, and operators manual.

Even a large yard is easy to clean up with this blower.

Choosing Bird Seed or Bird Food (Part 3)

!: Choosing Bird Seed or Bird Food (Part 3)

Corn: cracked, shelled, whole

If you are a bird feeder on a budget or if you are feeding hoards of birds feeding corn is one way to keep your birds happy.

Whole ears of corn offered on spike feeders or on hangers will make the woodpeckers and squirrels very happy. It's great fun to watch a squirrel trying to figure out a revolving corn wheel. Place your squirrel feeders as far as possible from your other bird feeders.

Shelled corn in hopper bird feeder or hanging tray feeders will attract cardinals, jays, ravens, crows, and grosbeaks.

Cracked corn in ground feeder trays will attract quails, grouse, pheasants, ducks, dove, starlings blackbirds, house sparrows and cowbirds.

Corn has a couple of serious problems: First, it is the bird food that has the highest risk of becoming contaminated with aflatoxins, which is harmful to birds. Second, it is a favorite of bears, raccoons, and deer-none of which we need to be feeding.

To decrease the chance of contamination don't buy corn in plastic bags, do not let it get wet (I keep mine in metal trash cans and only keep 50 pounds on hand), and in very humid or wet weather only put out what will be eaten in a day. Make sure you clean up the old corn and dispose of it, the compost pile is a good place.

It is best to have all of your corn feeders away from your other bird feeders so the less aggressive birds will not be scared off. If you can, separate them with a screen of shrubs or trees.

Never use any corn that has any type of die on it because it is probably a poison. Do not feed any popped corn it spoils too easily.

If you have a snow or an ice storm cracked corn is a good way to feed a lot of birds quickly. Feed smaller amounts several times during the day to reduce waste and spoilage.

Suet

Suet is now considered to be most kinds of beef fat and is safe to feed to birds. Suet is very attractive to insect eating birds, including woodpeckers, jays, nuthatches, chickadees, and starlings. Occasionally cardinals, wrens, thrashers, kinglets, creepers, and even some warblers will visit suet feeders. Suet is a high calorie energy source, that is easy for many birds to digest and metabolize, and is very important to birds in cold weather.

Raw suet goes bad quickly when the temperature is above freezing for any extended time. It is recommended tat you use rendered suet, which has been melted and has had the impurities removed. rendered suet can still get soft in the summer and coat the belly feathers of birds. If the bird is nesting the suet can clog the pores of the eggs preventing the embryo from getting enough oxygen.

Most of the suet cakes you can buy have a mixture of corn meal, cracked corn, peanuts, fruits or dried insects. Corn and peanuts can provide a medium for bacteria growth. Therefore, you may want to make your own suet cakes or make sure you are buying a high quality product. Always check the contents and the expiration date. I keep my suet cakes in the refrigerator until I use them.

I use several types of suet feeders including upside down feeders and combination suet/tray feeders.

I hope this article will help you in choosing bird food/seed and let you know what birds you; can expect to attract.

How to Get Wild Birds to Visit a New Bird Feeder in Your Backyard

!: How to Get Wild Birds to Visit a New Bird Feeder in Your Backyard

If you are planning on installing a new bird feeder for wild birds somewhere in your backyard, then you will be hoping that the birds will soon be there and feeding within hours. However you may find that 24 hours later that not even one single bird has visited. So now you are wondering what you have done wrong!

Do you just keep waiting or is there something you can do to attract them and get them to start using the feeder you have just invested in. Fortunately all is not lost and there are many things you can do to ensure that the wild birds will visit the new feeder in your backyard. And when they do you will be able to enjoy your bird watching just as you originally intended.

When it comes to birds and attracting them into a new environment you have to make sure that the birds are comfortable being in that location and just as for the whole of their lives it is their personal safety which is critical. If they don't feel safe they probably won't visit and if they do they will soon be out of there. So the safety of the birds in the location of the bird feeder should be your major objective when selecting a position for your new birdfeeder in your yard.

So you really decide to decide where you can put your bird feeder in an area of your yard that is going to safe for the birds. You need to ensure that there are bushes and trees close to your feeder that the birds can fly to easily if they feel in danger from a predator.

Wild birds will always prefer locations where there is cover and when they feel safer they will be able to settle down and feed on your new feeder and you will be able to start birding at last.

If you want to attract even more birds to your new feeders then place a birdbath or some other source of water, such as a small fountain, close to your feeders. Some birds will just come into your backyard for a drink or to bathe and when feeding many birds require water and may go back to feeding after drinking. This will give your birds even more reason to stay in your yard and you will be able to spend more time watching them

Once the bird feeder is in a good location then you can look at other things that will help attract more birds to your feeder. Your choice of feeder and the bird food you put in it for your wild birds can make a big difference to the number and species of bird that you will be able to persuade to visit your backyard.

Speak to you feeder supplier and tell them the types of wild birds that you expect to see in your yard and they will be able to help you choose the right feeder and also advice on the best food for these birds. Feeders with many perches and feeding holes are best as they will allow more birds to feed together at the same time, which is especially important in time of high competition such as during the winter months.

Also critical is the type of wild bird fool you use to fill your feeder. The right kind of food has a direct relationship with the numbers and species of birds you will see at your feeders. Many birds prefer to eat seed, but there are others that prefer to eat suet, nuts and fruit. This really depends also on the species of bird that naturally inhabit the region within which you live, so either check online or speak to you bird feed supplier for advice.

Choosing the Right Bird Seed to Attract Wild Birds

!: Choosing the Right Bird Seed to Attract Wild Birds

There are many different types of bird seed and other bird foods that you may want to consider when trying to attract birds to your yard. The bird food you choose will determine which birds visit your feeder, so choosing the right type of bird food is important. The variety of bird food available may seem overwhelming at first, but there are really only a few types of bird seed you need to know about to get started.

Black-Oil Sunflower Seed Black-oil sunflower seed is the most popular bird seed, and is recommend for attracting the widest variety of birds to your feeder. When you open a bag of quality black-oil sunflower seed, you'll know why! This seed smells wonderful. In addition, black-oil sunflower seeds have a thinner shell than most other seeds, which makes it easier for birds to access the food inside. Black-oil sunflower seeds are larger than many other types of sunflower seeds, including striped or white sunflower seeds, which makes them even more popular with birds. Blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, finches, nuthatches, and sparrows all love black-oil sunflower seed. If you are new to bird feeding, black-oil sunflower seeds are the best place to start!

Thistle or Nyjer Seed Nyjer seed, also referred to as thistle seed, is a high quality, expensive seed that is generally cultivated in Asia and Africa. This seed is expensive, but it is highly valued among bird enthusiasts because no other seed attracts finches like Nyjer seed. Goldfinches are especially attracted to Nyjer seed. These birds have a beautiful gold color and they are a pleasure to watch. Nyjer seed requires a special bird feeder with smaller holes, otherwise the seed will simply fall out. An economical way to feed Nyjer seed is to purchase a Nyjer or thistle sock. These socks have small holes in them that birds can pull Nyjer seed through.

Mixed Seed Seed mixes are also extremely popular with bird enthusiasts. Because different seeds attract different types of birds, a quality seed mix can attract a variety of birds. However, using a seed mix is not always preferable. Many birds will pick through your seeds, discarding what they don't want. This can cost you a lot of money and create a huge mess below your feeder. While seed mixes can be an effective way to feed several different birds, I generally don't recommend them unless you purchase a "no-mess" seed mix. "No-mess" seed mixes have been dehulled, which means that only edible parts of the seed remain. This ensures that any mess below your feeder will be quickly cleaned up by ground feeding birds of other scavengers like squirrels. Another advantage to seed mixes is that they are very economical. While some seeds, like black-oil sunflower seed and Nyjer seed, may be very expensive, a seed mix will generally mix these quality seeds with less expensive seeds like cracked corn.

Suet Suet is a healthy source of protein for birds, especially in the winter months. When food is scarce, suet may be a lifeline for the birds in your yard. Suet consists of animal fat, and is generally mixed with some seeds. Real suet is a difficult substance to deal with, as it may melt in high temperatures or spoil quickly. Suet-like cakes and plugs are also commonly sold, and birds seem to enjoy these as well. Suet is generally fed through suet cages. Some people also feed suet plugs that they stuff into a suet plug feeder. These simple feeders are generally small logs with hollow holes for the suet plugs. Blue jays, chickadees, woodpeckers, and many other birds enjoy suet.

Nectar Only a few birds enjoy nectar, which is essentially sugar water. Hummingbirds are the most notable nectar-loving birds. They are a pleasure to watch in your backyard. Orioles also enjoy nectar, although they prefer a different type of nectar, so make sure you buy oriole nectar if you are feeding orioles. You need to be careful when feeding nectar, as it spoils rapidly, and spoiled nectar may hurt the birds you enjoy watching outside.

There are many other types of food that you can feed birds. Many birds enjoy peanuts, cracked corn, millet, and oranges. Simply putting out some old bread crumbs may attract birds to your yard. Whatever you decide to feed, remember to slow down and enjoy yourself. Watching birds is a wonderful pastime that reduces stress, and helps people connect to nature and their families. Happy bird watching!

Lessons From My Neighbor's Bird-Feeder

!: Lessons From My Neighbor's Bird-Feeder

The birds have wormed their way into yet another blog. No pun intended. Well, actually, it's not really a pun. I mean, birds eat worms, but not the kind of birds we're talking about here..

Forget it. The fact is, I got some keen insights while checking out the constant flow of birds next door. As a birdwatcher, I get a lot of gratification seeing them trudge out to the feeder every day, and me just able to watch all the results.

Okay, so I have to scrub my new wood fence every once in a while, since they do need a place to "rest" after they eat. But there I go again. To the lessons:

1. These neighbors have been so faithful to provide food every day! The word has gotten around that anyone who is interested can get 3 squares daily (and even a place to...rest... afterwards.) Wow, that preaches. Faithfulness. How many of us start our little projects for the Lord then give up when it gets a little difficult or boring? But we were so sure God had spoken...

Trouble is, when you stop feeding birds, one of two things happen. They go elsewhere for food. Or, in winter, they can die. People too. What will happen now to the ones you started to feed...?

2. I noticed that some other critters responded to the invitation. Squirrels try to horn in on the goodies and actually intimidate the feathered folk after awhile. No problem. Jack and Sue have provided tasty squirrel-type meals elsewhere in the yard. It's a safe haven for birds now.

So it is when we serve the Lord, that the Enemy shows up. Our hearts are all a-flutter (pun intended), we run for cover, and assume the Enemy deserves to win, and we should just try something else. How many courageous and creative folks are among us who will come up with plans B, C, and the rest of the alphabet as needed?

3. I notice that my neighbors haven't got hold of this last one yet. Hopefully I'm being prophetic. Different foods attract different birds. Your typical grocery store bird food will get you your typical run of the mill (sometimes pest) bird. To attract the more "exotic" type, you're gonna need specialized foods purchased at stores that know all about birds.

That translates over into the human thing like this: We must understand that folks are just different, every one of them. There's a message that is right for every heart, and although "generic" Bible studies are fine in their place, the Holy Spirit will illuminate a particular verse for a particular person at a particular time. If you ask. I would imagine that if enough of that happens at your meeting, a bunch of exotic needs are going to show up.

Well, happy birding. Set up those feeders, birds WILL come. (No translation necessary)
